Award-winning actor Idris Elba is returning to the big screen in Above the Below, a new survival thriller that takes audiences from the dangers of outer space to the crushing depths of the ocean. The upcoming film, co-directed by Elba and Martin Owen, is scheduled for release in the United States on December 4, 2026.
Starring Elba alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, the 87-minute thriller follows three astronauts whose mission takes a devastating turn when they survive a disaster in space, only to find themselves facing an entirely different threat upon their return.
After an unexpected crash-landing, the astronauts become trapped deep beneath the ocean's surface, completely cut off from mission control. With their oxygen supply rapidly diminishing and no immediate means of rescue, the crew must confront increasingly dangerous circumstances while searching for a way to survive.
As time begins to run out, the astronauts are forced to make difficult decisions that could determine whether they live or die. With every breath becoming more valuable, the crew must navigate mounting obstacles, unexpected dangers, and the psychological pressure of being isolated in an environment where even the smallest mistake could prove fatal.
The film explores themes of survival, human resilience, teamwork, and the difficult choices people make when confronted with extraordinary circumstances. By combining the dangers of space exploration with the unforgiving environment of the deep ocean, Above the Below places its characters in a situation where escape appears nearly impossible.
Elba takes on a dual role in the production, serving as both a leading actor and co-director alongside Martin Owen, who also created the film. The screenplay was written by Elizabeth Morris, Matthew Mitchell, and Vicki Sargent, with Gina Carter and Matt Williams serving as producers.
The supporting cast includes Caitlin FitzGerald, known for her work in television and film, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who gained widespread recognition through the After film franchise.
With its confined setting, limited oxygen supply, and escalating dangers, Above the Below centers on the astronauts' desperate fight against time as they attempt to overcome circumstances that threaten their survival.
